Job transfer is no good news.
It creates ripples among workers. This
is especially true nowadays when the economy is down, things are
becoming more expensive, and there are too many people competing for
jobs.
The decision to transfer people is no easy task on the part of employers.
To employees, the decision to accept or refuse the
transfer can cause trauma and sleepless nights. There is the possibility that refusing the transfer can jeopoardise career prospects. There are organizations that consider refusal to be transferred as insubordination that calls for dismissal.
There
are important matters to consider when making these hard decisions. How
do organizations ensure that they have made a reasonably good decision
in matters such as staff transfer. Livelihood and even family harmony
can be put at risk. Workplace harmony may suffer.
How can the worker be assured that
there is minimal disruption to his life and members of his
family? Is it a lose-win, win-lose or a win-win arrangement?
Organizations
need to implement effective and fair transfer policies. Policies can
help or break organizations depending on how well these have been
drafted and implemented.
Organizations need to spell out transfer policies in their terms and conditions of appointment. But even if this is provided for in the employment terms, there is the need to act fairly when transferring people.
